On January 21, 2023, Okayama Breakin' Culture Association joined NHK Okayama to open the year's first battle — Akeome Battle 2023 — at Hikari-no-Hiroba. The day ran two brackets in parallel: a regional Breaking Crew vs Crew and an inter-university Freestyle Crew vs Crew, drawing 144 dancers centered on Chugoku and Shikoku with entries from Tokyo and Osaka as well.
The Breaking side took 17 crews and 105 dancers. Eight crews advanced through pickup prelims, and the final went to the coolest — the Okayama crew anchored by JDSF-backed ISSIN (Korakukan High) — who took down Himeji's K-NINE CREW 3–0 to claim the inaugural title. The inter-university Freestyle brought in 6 schools and 39 dancers. Between teams layering routines into their runs, SBF (Okayama University) — a mixed 6-member crew of breakers and lockers — held on for the crown.
NHK handed out a breaking primer booklet supervised by JDSF (Japan DanceSport Federation) on site, turning the year's first battle into an entry point for newcomers. Entries and schedule details are archived on Judgames.
